![]() Why is it then that Spike is hated so much? And how can it be resolved? How can the fandom get teached what and who Spike really is and what his role in the show really means? So, this theory can't be the answer either. Heck, even Diamond Tiara, a filly who is the walking devil, who torments and tortures three of her classmates mentally and psychologically, who destroyed almost the whole life of Scootaloo over the course of 48 hours and who felt utmost enjoyment while doing so, seems to get less hate than Spike in some moments! Even Gilda seems to get more love lately, now that she made up with Rainbow Dash and we've seen that she has a good side. A true product of chaos.Īnd yet the fandom loves him. He is not a member of any known species, he is a draconequus, a creature mixed of several different species. The fandom feels threatened by Spike, because he takes up at least one episode per season that could be an episode with a pony as the main character.īut then there's Discord. So this could very well be the reason for the Spike hate: I admit, even I was angry about it that the season got a Spike episode towards the end, instead of a second Cutie Mark Crusaders episode and until this day, in all these almost two years since I saw "Spike at Your Service" for the first time, I still would have liked an episode about how Applebloom, Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle tried to look after the pets and tried to get critter grooming cutie marks, an episode from their perspective of the events, more than an episode from Spike's perspective. And then Spike comes and takes away one more. If that's the case, it would explain why "Spike at Your Service" seems to be the most hated Spike episode ever, because with only 13 episodes in Season 3, this meant a low number on pony episodes anyway. Similar to how many, as I heard, where indifferent about it when the first Cutie Mark Crusaders episodes aired, because the fandom feared the show would get childish, only to be disproven of that right at the beginning when it showed how awesome they are, the fandom maybe felt that a few episodes about a dragon as the main focus of the plot would take away some pony episodes from it and thus, developed a subconsious hate against Spike. And hate against a dragon as main character would explain why he already got hate when "Owl's Well That Ends Well" aired. Spike is the big exception of the mane main cast. Is it something more mundane, has the fandom problems with accepting characters in the show that aren't ponies? And reacts with hate to everyone with a bigger role who isn't a pony? This seems more plausible. ![]() They are, despite being fillies, far away from being immature.īut on the other side, Spike is very wise, he is snarky and sarcastic, he is very mature too, even seems to be more mature than Applebloom, Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle, and, most importantly, he is not a child anymore (more about that further down), so, this is not the answer on the fandom's incapability to understand Spike. They are smart, they are intelligent, they are badass and fearless and pull off a lot of cool and epic stuff you wouldn't expect from three little fillies in the age range from 7 - 10 (over the years since Twilight came to Ponyville). At one side, it would explain why Applebloom, Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle are so much loved despite that they are childs. There is definitely something, something that leads to it that the whole fandom almost collectively misses the point with Spike.īut what? It must be something very deep-seated, that's for sure, because already Spike's very first episode "Owl's Well That Ends Well", that is just one of many great Spike episodes, earned a lot of harsh criticism and hate.ĭoes the fandom hate immature characters? Answering this question is very hard. Why does the fandom have so huge problems to understand Spike?įinding the answer on these questions would be an interesting task, an interesting subject for a scientific study. Why do so many think he is not a good character? Why do so many think that he is lacking something? That his episodes lack something?Īnd why do I seem to be the ONLY ONE in the fandom who truly understands him and his personality, as well as his role in the show? But I find it much more interesting to ask: ![]() ![]() Your editorial sounds like you're trying to figure out what the meaning behind Spike is and how to make sense of him. The only character in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic who is truly misunderstood by the fandom. It turned out as a full-blown analyzis about Spike and the fandom, which is something I have not expected to happen when I started writing the comment, so I thought about sharing it here too:Īh yes, Spike. I just came across an editorial about Spike on Equestria Daily and seeing a lot of the common misconceptions about him expressed in it, I spontaneously decided to write a comment about it. ![]()
